Batat Fov/Poha (Flattened Rice)

Krishna the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu was born in the auspicious month of Shravan as per the Hindu Calendar which is celebrated as Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami. Fov, as we call it in Goa, popularly known as Poha (Flattened Rice), is a must-eat for Krishna Janmashtami. So also Poha is an amazing Indian breakfast ingredient which if prepared with Onion is referred to as Kanda Poha (Onion Poha) and this is the pure vegetarian version of the recipe without onion. Poha can be made into various sweet as well as savory preparations. We Goans make all varieties of Poha for Janmashtami and Diwali celebrations every year.

Sharing here is one of the savory Poha referred to as Batat(Potato)Fov/Poha which is a super easy, quick, and delicious recipe to try out.

Here is the recipe

Ingredients

1 cup Poha(Flattened Rice) with medium thickness

½ tsp Mustard seeds

1/4th tsp asafoetida (Hing) or ¼ Inch Shankarchap Hing (I used the latter)

5-6 curry leaves

1 medium-size green chili slit

½ tsp turmeric powder

Pinch of sugar

½ tsp Salt

2 tbsp freshly grated coconut

1 small potato boiled with salt, turmeric and cut into cubes

Water as required

1 tbsp cooking oil

Procedure

Wash the Poha(Flattened rice) thoroughly well, drain the excess water and let it rest in a vessel with a little water.

Add turmeric, salt, sugar and mix well and keep this aside for 10-15mins.

In a flat bottom pan, heat oil.

Once it heats well add asafetida, mustard seeds. Let it splutter.

Now add in the slit green chilly followed by curry leaves.

Add the boiled potatoes and mix well.

Now tip in the Poha kept aside for softening.

Mix well until all the spices blend well with the Poha.

Sprinkle the freshly grated coconut.

Check for the salt at this stage and add more if required.

Serve hot.

Tips and Notes

In case of adding onion, it has to be cut into thin slices and added before adding the potatoes. Rest of the recipe remaining the same. Onion has its taste which adds an amazing flavor to the Poha preparation.
