Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated for a minimum of Dedh Dis(one and a half-day) in Goa and Panchami is the last day of celebration and festivities. For those who celebrate it longer the fun continues. On the Panchami day we prepare Chanyache Tonak (Chana Masala), Idli also called Heet along with Nallacho ross (Fresh Coconut milk with godd(Jaggery) and Elaichi.) along with plain rice and more dishes as per families choices.
Our thali looked like this with all the above-mentioned items along with Mung beans Saar(Prepared with the leftover water of the mung beans).
Besides
overeating, the feasting that happens during these festive meals leads to
napping post-lunch followed by a Kadak(Strong) cup of tea specially prepared by
the mothers or aunts in the house on waking up without which everything seems
incomplete.. hehe..
I am
sure my fellow Goans will agree with me on this…
I hope
all had a great celebration this time being “the new normal” way.
Here I
am sharing the recipe of Chanyache Tonak( Goan style Chana Masala)
Ingredients
2 cup
green peas (Soaked in water the previous night)
1 1/4th
cup freshly grated coconut
2 dried
red chilies (I use 1 Goan Canacona chili and 1 Kashmiri red chilly)
4-5
peppercorns
½ inch
cinnamon stick
2-3
cloves
½ tsp
turmeric powder
1 tbsp
Coriander seeds
½ inch
tamarind
1
medium-size potato
Salt to
taste
Required
water
Procedure
Soak the green peas overnight in
water. Next morning pressure- cook them along with potato cubes and salt on a
medium flame for 2 whistles.
Dry roast the spices namely red
chilly, coriander seeds, cinnamon, cloves, peppercorns, coconut until fragrant
and slightly golden brown.
Add turmeric powder, tamarind to
it along with the required amount of water and blend it to a smooth paste.
Now
combine the pressure cooked Green peas and potatoes with the ground paste. Add
salt to taste along with a dash of water.
Let it
boil well. Serve hot with Idlis/ Chapatis/Dosa/Bread.
Tips and Notes
The above-mentioned recipe is a pure vegetarian version of Chanyache Tonak.
But it can be also made adding onion.
Adding
half medium size onion for the dry roasting and 1 medium-size finely chopped onion
for pressure cooking along with green peas makes it even tastier.
Chanyache Tonak along with the Farsaan
(Snack made with gram flour ready available in general stores) with some finely
chopped onion, fresh coriander tastes awesome accompanied with a Pav (Bread)
making it a lovely combo of Misal Pav.
